HEAD COACH ANALYSIS
We started Saturdays home game against Chelmsford like we finished the game in the Riverside a week earlier, 3-0 up after the first period and we put ourselves in a great position to pick up another win. Intensity and application was great.
But of course that is not how it played out… we took our foot off the gas and let them work their way back into the game. Credit to them they grafted all game long and deserved the win in the end. We rallied together in the 3rd but left ourselves too much to do. It was very disappointing considering what I know this team is capable of. But in sport things don’t always go your way and we have to be better for the lessons we are given.
My Sunday actually had 2 games… in the morning I got to witness my son Luca’s very first game with our u10’s team the Buckeroos. They played 3 games winning 2 and were tremendous throughout. Of course I was a proud dad, but not just because I got to see Lu play his first game but also to see the great commitment that the whole team put in.
I took huge inspiration in that for our return game with Chelmsford that evening. I told the boys about what I had seen earlier in the day before we hit the ice. Keeping things simple, working hard, staying together as a team, playing with a smile… fundamentals that every and any team need.
We had a decent start but you could say we were a little fortuitous early with a couple lucky bounces resulting in a lead at the end of the first. Those lucky bounces came from hard work and the fundamentals I just mentioned.
From then on it was a battle to the end where we stayed together, stuck to the plan and Big Reg stepped up in OT to secure us the win. What a weekend for him – Gordie Howe hat trick on Saturday and OT winner on Sunday. 👏 It was great to have him with us and a big thank you to Ali and the Mustangs on that.
Special mentions have to go out to Rich who had a great weekend offensively, Longer for his leadership across the week, Gregor for literally putting his body on the line blocking countless shots and of course Tyler starting his first game with us and putting in a tremendous performance. 💪
We look forward now to a week of good practice and then next weekend our game with Streatham. I am looking to see just exactly how far we have come in the last few weeks.
