Springer-Hughes began his hockey days as a junior at Streatham, playing for both the U16s and U18s before icing on a two-way for the NIHL1 team in 2014. A move to Canada saw him continue his career for the following two years in the Canadian Greater Metro Hockey League with stints at both the Bracebridge Blues and Tottenham Steam. A return to the UK and a place at university led to the player joining the Nottingham Lions for two seasons and in his second term he was the Lions’ top scorer with 17 goals and 9 assists.
Ruskin joined the Sheffield Scimitars in the interrupted 20-21 season and in his second season there he claimed the accolade for the teams’ top points scorer totalling 28pts in all competitions across 32 games.
The impactful and committed forward first iced for the Mos in September and showed great promise early on but a nasty injury involving 2 broken bones in his hand during training in October meant his participation was curtailed for a number of months. Following surgery and a lengthy period of recovery he was welcomed back on to the ice in December to much anticipation. In the 27 games he played he scored 10 goals and assisted in a further 12 more giving him a points total of 22.
Springer-Hughes subsequently re-signed for the club last summer and took to the ice again in September where he completed a, largely, injury free season. He sustained a knock to his ankle in the latter part of the regular season but was able to return in time for the playoffs. We saw an energetic, reliable and committed Springer-Hughes throughout who is nothing but professional, on and off the ice, culminating in him being honoured with the Andy Martin Award at our End of Season Presentation Night – an Award that recognises these vital attributes. In the 40 games he iced he scored 22 goals, assisted in another 35 more giving him a points total of 57, testament to his progression and valuable contribution.
On his return to the Mos, Springer-Hughes said “Following a strong personal season for me in 2023/24, I felt that the coaches, strong signings, and plans for the coming season that Karl has in place make Dynamos the team to be a part of to keep building on my game, and hopefully bring home some silverware this season”.
“Ruskin was fantastic for us last season. His intensity levels both during games and to trainings were exceptional, so it was no surprise that he had his most productive season offensively. His game really matured, alongside also his positioning within the line up. He was fully deserving of his Andy Martin Award. I expect him to continue next season where he left off last and to take his game to even higher levels. I’m very happy to have him back and know that he can’t wait to get going too”!
