HEAD COACH ANALYSIS

I write this note to you all today as being very honest I don’t have much of a voice left after that final period Sunday! 😂

My first weekend as Head Coach of my childhood club had highs and lows, like I guess every and any season I’ve ever experienced in hockey.

Team photoAs the KM said, the clash with Streatham was a ‘Baptism of Fire’ and it certainly lived up to the billing. I felt that for two periods we really stuck with them and could have found ourselves closer in score at the start of the 3rd if we had taken some of the chances we created. But for a first game together, of course we are still learning from each other and how we can be more effective in those situations.

The boys and I were obviously disappointed with our 3rd period where I think fatigue, a move away from the system we had played and some individual errors saw us concede a flurry of goals. They’re a strong team that will punish you if you give them a chance. But I don’t think the score reflected the bulk of the game. Of course, there’s lots of learnings for us in such a defeat that we must be better for in the future.

But what encouraged me on Saturday was how hard the boys work, how they stuck together and adapted as the game moved on. Those are traits that any successful team needs. So whilst we were down, I knew very much that we were doing many things right.MOM - Copy

Moving into Sunday I felt it took us a little time to really get into the game properly. We had a decent first period where I felt we were solid. In the 2nd I thought we began to look tired and whilst being wasteful ourselves with chances… the Raiders team took the opportunities against us on the break.

Thankfully in the 3rd we made some slight alterations and we found our 2nd wind. We combined for some great goals and that for me was more reminiscent of what I’ve seen these lads do in trainings leading up to the weekend.

I was incredibly proud of the team and how they pulled together to come from behind and get the result. I was so desperate to get that W. They and you all deserved it. Our experienced heads showed up in the final period to make the difference. This was complimented by the huge positives our young players created throughout the game. Our young men were exceptional across the weekend, working hard, keeping composure… they looked very much at home. Filled me with huge pride.

Group huddle - CopyI must finish by saying thanks to all the great support we had across the weekend, on Saturday away from home – you guys were relentless. 👏 Then on Sunday, well that final period was electric and reminded me so much of my time playing back in the day. We’ll need some more of that this weekend please 🙏
