It’s a welcome return for our 2016/17 Coach’s Player of the Year and Playoff Champion Mason Webster after the 22 year old put pen to paper to extend his stay in Gillingham for a second season.
Having previously iced against the Invicta Dynamos, Mason Webster was tempted to Kent in the summer of 2016 and became an instant hit with the Mos faithful with his determined displays, work around the net and willingness to drop the gloves. In 43 games, spent predominantly on the team’s top line, the powerful forward notched 6 goals but more impressively played a role in 29 more for a total of 35 points. Meanwhile numerous scraps in defence of the badge saw him tally 187 penalty minutes in his debut campaign. His efforts both in games and in training were then deservedly rewarded at the end of season player awards when Head Coach Kevin Parrish selected the club’s number 22 as his Player of the Year.
Prior to making his mark at the SilverBlades, Mason Webster began his hockey journey as a junior in Chelmsford before a stint in the NIHL South’s second tier with the Haringey Racers. The Peterborough Phantoms saw his potential and gave him a berth in the EPL in 2014/15 but it was with the London Raiders in the NIHL South Division 1 that he caught the eye of Dynamos Head Coach Kevin Parrish with numerous battling displays against his side. Now, having been drawn from the gold and blue of the Raiders, Webster has made Gillingham his hockey home and his tough brand of physical hockey will once again be on display in Kent as the Mos look to make their mark in what is now British ice hockey’s second tier.
Speaking on the re-signing of Mason Webster, Head Coach Kevin Parrish said, “Mason’s value to the team was there for all to see in 2016/17 and there was never a doubt that I would want him back so I’m delighted he was just as keen to pledge his immediate future to the club. Mason earned his spot on the top line last term and his forechecking, eye for a pass and excellent work in the corners saw him rack up numerous assists. Just as important, his willingness to stick up for his teammates gave us a physical presence that we had perhaps been missing for a number of seasons and ensured the rest of the guys could focus on their hockey. Away from games Mason brings an excellent attitude to the ice in training and is determined to give his all to constantly improve and ensure the club enjoys success. I’m very pleased to be working with him again in 2017/18 and I’ve no doubt the fans will be just as happy to see our number 22 back at the SilverBlades”.
Powerhouse Mason Webster is the third player announced by the Invicta Dynamos this off season following the return of import defenceman Ondrej Zosiak and netminder Damien King. Further signings will be revealed in the near future as Head Coach Kevin Parrish continued to tinker with his team ahead of the NIHL South Division 1 puck drop in early September.
