Mos held by Solent for second stalemate

Invicta Dynamos came away from Gosport with their second tie of the weekend after a 2-2 draw with the Solent Devils in the NIHL South Division 1 despite leading 2-1 going into the final period.

Heading into the game Adam McNicoll, Grant Baxter, brothers Haydn and Taylor Wootton and captain Nicky Lewis were all missing from the visiting roster.

ondrejzosiak_banner_011115The Dynamos started at a steady pace in the opening period and on 03.50 Ondrej Zosiak came close to breaking the deadlock with a shot from the blue line during a powerplay but the puck was well held by home netminder Christian Cole. At the other end of the ice, Damien King made his first stop of the night – gathering an effort from George Norcliffe at 06.31. Further chances for the Dynamos fell to Josh Condren, Conor Redmond and Zosiak once more but the Solent defence and netminder remained firm. When Conor Redmond was penalised for boarding on 15.39 Solent then took advantage on the resulting powerplay – Ben Lock driving a shot through traffic into the corner of the Invicta goal with King unsighted at 16.17.

The second period started with a duel between Arran Strawson and Christian Cole – Cole saving well from Strawson on 20.40 and 23.00 when it looked certain the Mos’ D-man would equalise. At 23.40 a loose puck then found its way to Ondrej Zosiak who didn’t think twice about shooting but again Solent’s goalie came out on top. However any doubt about where and when the Dynamos goal would come from was finally put to rest at 25.40 – Strawson picking up possession from a face-off claimed by Steve Osman and skating down the Solent left before firing a shot across the goal that hit Cole and fell over the line behind him. A few minutes later, on 29.12, Invicta would double their lead – Ondrej Zosiak sent the puck across the crease where a waiting Conor Redmond prodded home to put the away side 2-1 to the good. After the strike the mist from a very foggy outside must have got to the head of Stephen Gosset as he jumped Josh Condren. The officials consisting of Mr. Evans and Mr. Biggs only saw the incident as a minor penalty and gave a fortunate Gosset 2 minutes for roughing.

The third period began with Josh Condren skating behind Christain Cole’s net and looking to feed Conor Redmond in front but Redmond was quickly closed down and his shot was padded away by the netminder’s outstretched leg. A scramble in front of the Solent goal on 44 minutes then led to further opportunities for Condren, Jacob Ranson and Ondrej Zosiak but Cole was equal to anything thrown at him and it remained 2-1. Such failed chances were soon punished and Solent grabbed an equaliser through Richard Facey on 45.47 with the assist going to Mason Wild. Meanwhile, despite his earlier misdemeanour, the red mist was still lurking around Steve Gossett as the night went on and he grabbed Jack Lee on 47.23 which led to the pair pulling at each other’s jerseys and getting a few punches in each before hitting the ground and collecting 2+2 in penalty minutes each. After the clash the game filtered out with a few half chances near the end but a spirited Dynamos team had to make do with a draw in a rink where they have at times struggled to come away with even a point.

So it was another draw for the Mos after the disappointment of a tie on home ice against the Cardiff NIHL Devils the night before. Invicta’s man of the match went to the hard skating Joshua Condren whilst Richard Facey picked-up the beers for the hosting Devils. Chico Cole faced 53 shots from the Dyaamos and finished with a save percentage of 96.23% whilst Damien King tackled 37 attempts by the Devils giving him a save rate of 94.59%.
