Invicta Dynamos finished the weekend with yet another four points by completing an 11-2 victory against the Oxford City Stars at Planet Ice Gillingham on Sunday night.
Goals from Anthony Leone (2), Tomas Banovsky (2), Conor Redmond (2), Luke Thirkettle, Elliot Farrell, Jake Stedman, Juraj Huska and Owen Dell helped the Dynamos secure their an emphatic win – their sixth in a row.
Dynamos were missing Gregor McAllan, Kieron Jones, Mark Williams and Arran Strawson. Oxford missed Jake Florey, Adam Andrews, Dax Hedges and Michael Whillock. Zachary Grandy-Smith started in net for the Dynamos whilst Ross Miller was between the pipes for Oxford.
In the opening frame Dale Buckland made a nervy start as he gave the puck away and Josh Oliver managed to get a shot on Grandy-Smith but the netminder pushed wide. Oxford had another chance soon after asDarren Elliot took a slapshot from the top of the left circle but the goalie again pulled off a quick pad save.
Down the other end the Dynamos got their first chance as Banovsky skated the full length of the ice but his shot was deflected away by Miller. Another opportunity came as Brandon Webster set up Huska who smashed towards the net but Miller again stood up to the test.
First penalty of the game came as Jack Hayes received two-minutes for hooking to put the hosts on the powerplay and defenceman Henry Aiken tried to get his second goal of the season with a backhand flick right in front but he too would be denied. Moments later the Mos thought they had finally broken the deadlock – Banovsky skating from one end to the other and seeing his shot blocked but the puck was poked in from close range only for the referee to wash out the effort for man in the crease.
The call would matter little seconds later – Huska shooting the puck into the top left corner giving the Dynamos a 1-0 lead at 11:25. Farrell tried to increase that lead as he skated around three Oxford players but his eventual shot went over the net. In response, Oxford managed to escape their zone 2-on-1 with Oliver passing the puck to the back post where Max Florey was waiting but Grandy-Smith slid across his crease to make the save and prevent the tap in. Another opportunity came as Aiken over committed allowing the Stars to escape once again, this time 3-on-1, but Elliot tried to score with a slapshot from out wide rather than passing to the middle and missed the target.
With one second left in the first period the Dynamos made the visitors pay for their misses – Huska passing to the slot were Stedman turned beyond Miller for 2-0 at 19:59. End of the first and Dynamos led 2-0.
The second period began with Tom Davis passing the puck to Banovsky who got a clear shot on Miller but instead found the crossbar. At the other end of the ice Oxford forward Oliver Shone tried to get the Stars first goal of the night but his shot was fired over the top of the net. Again the Stars would pay for missed chances – from his own zone Banovsky skating past all five Oxford players and flicking into the net from point blank range for 3-0 at 26:24.
Oxford managed to respond soon after – Joe Edwards shooting through Buckland and catching Grandy-Smith cold – the goalie initially saving the puck before but it then slipped from his pads and crossed the goal line behind him.
Despite the setback the Dynamos reclaimed the momentum and retaliated with another at 30.58 – Webster taking possession around the back of the net before passing to Redmond who converted from right in front to make it 4-1. Straight off the face off Remond then had another – Davis finding the forward clear down the right and the Irishman roofed over Miller for goal five at 31:06. Oxford followed the goal with a timeout and took the opportunity to replace Ross Miller in net with Mark Duffy.
The change of netminder did little to break the Dynamos scoring streak and the hosts had another at 32:42 – Dell’s shot was given up for the rebound by Duffy and Farrell was in place to poke into the net for 6-1 at 32:42. Soon after, Thirkettle decided he needed to add his name to the list of scorers as he roofed over Duffy following a faceoff in the Oxford zone faceoff at 36:24. End of the second period and the Dynamos led 7-1.
In the final period Banovsky swiftly secured his second of the night at 41:39 – the forward beating two Oxford players to go clear on goal and beating Duffy on the backhand for 8-1. Oxford then attempted to net their second but Oliver was unlucky as his effort found only the underside of the crossbar before bouncing to safety.
At the other end the Mos were more successful – Stedman carried the play down the left channel before passing inside to Huska who teed up Leone at the back post for 9-1 at 50:48. The Stars then finally mustered a reply at 52:37 – Shone dispossessed Buckland behind the Dynamos net before finding Jake Williams in front who converted at close range.
After conceding, the Mos were intent on securing double figures and came close as Stedman found Harrison Lillis charging towards the net but Lillis’ effort was well saved by Duffy. Oxford’s task then became that little bit tougher as Florey received a two-minute slashing penalty to put the hosts on the powerplay and they took advantage – Leone made receiving a pinpoint pass from Davis to go clear and converting over Duffy for 10-1 57:09.
The last of the night followed at 58:21 – Ryan Morgan tried his luck from the blue line and, though his effort was blocked, Dell was on hand to swat the puck out of the air and beyond Duffy with an excellent finish at 58:21. End of the game and the Dynamos won 11-2 against Oxford City Stars making it six straight wins for the Mos in 2020.
Man of the match for Oxford was awarded to Joshua Oliver. Dynamos man of the match went to Conor Redmond.
