A short road trip into Essex to play the Chelmsford Chieftains resulted in a night to forget for the Invicta Dynamos on Sunday evening.
Having won in Cardiff the day before the Mos were looking for a 4 point weekend but fell behind on 02:05 – Julian Smith knocking the puck wide to Tom Wilson who shot beyond Grandy-Smith for 1-0. Matt Turner then played the puck to Cameron Bartlett and he cut inside all too easily before dispatching a shot past the netminder on 03:16 to add to early pain Invicta were suffering.
To make matters worse for the Mos the home side then went 3-0 inside 4 minutes when captain Ross Brears stuck on 03:55 – Invicta immediately calling a timeout to try and regroup. The Chieftains continued to attack though with Grandy-Smith keeping a few efforts out despite little protection in front of him. Although the Dynamos had 2 powerplays in the opening period they only struck 4 shots on target all period.
The 2nd period began with the Chieftains making the most of a Leone tripping penalty to go 4-0 up on 22:23 through Grant Bartlett and a minute later a fight broke out behind the play – Lillis and Wilson dropping the gloves and being sent to the penalty box once order was restored.
A quick double from Grant Bartlett (24:43 and 26:36) not only saw him grab a hat-trick it also put the hosts 6-0 up. Words between Grant Bartlett and Dale Buckland led to the pair dropping the gloves on 27:25 with Bartlett getting the takedown. That wasn’t the last of the fighting action though – Henry Aiken and Cameron Bartlett going toe to toe on 29:37 with Aiken getting the upper hand. By this time the Mos had swapped netminders with Owen Rider replacing Grandy-Smith and the youngster looked comfortable in the net and pulled out 5 saves during the period.
The Mos were on a 5-on-3 powerplay with the period closing out and denied the Chieftains a shutout when Tom Davis drove the puck past Sonny Phillips on 39:53 assisted by Brandon Webster for 6-1.
The final period saw Juraj Huska claw another goal back for Invicta on another powerplay (49:05) but Elliott Dervish (53:37) and Cameron Bartlett (56:46) wrapped the game up for the Chieftains who were comfortable 8-2 winners.
