Banovsky claims first in Raiders defeat

raiders_211219The Invicta Dynamos last away game of 2019 ended in defeat in Romford despite leading 3-1 at one point. The Mos had to make do without Anthony Leone who was suffering from an eye injury whilst illness also meant Owen Dell was added to a list of missing players that included Juraj Huska (suspension), Mark Williams, Kieron Jones and Gregor McAllan.

Poor defending gave the Romford Junior Raiders the perfect start when Ewan Hill was left unmarked in front of goal and he buried the puck past Grandy-Smith who couldn’t do anything about the situation he was exposed to on 1:16. Invicta then iced too many men which put the Raiders on the powerplay in which Tommy Huggett managed to cut inside from the left flank to shoot at the Invicta net with Grandy-Smith making a save. Invicta boke forward as soon as they returned to full strength with Elliot Farrell playing in Davis who makes no mistake to dispatch past netminder Jacob Stoodley for 1-1 on 4:28. Invicta went 2-1 up on 6:49 – A cool finish from Tomas Banovsky who grabbed his first Invicta goal after Luke Thirkettle and Joe Stephenson provided him with the opportunity. Invicta then piled-on the pressure with Farrell beating his marker and darting down the left before flicking the puck to Webster who called Stoodley into action. However, on another attack Banovský lost the puck with Huggett calling Grandy-Smith into action at the other end.

On 10:27 matters got heated when Ross Cowan boarded an Invicta’ player and was penalised for 2+10 minutes – with Brandon Webster seeing red from the incident and also getting two penalty minutes for unsporting conduct. Invicta went 3-1 to the good on 11:33 with Farrell curling a shot beyond Stoodley unassisted. A couple of minutes later the host pulled a goal back to make it 2-3 when the puck worked its way into a crowded Invicta’ goalmouth with Matt Brown getting a tip past Grandy-Smith on 13:53. One last chance in the period came when Banovský played a pass from defence to Strawson who was mid-ice with the defenceman shooting into the side netting.

The 2nd period had the first attempt falling to Banovský who forced Stoodley to save with his pad at the near post. Raiders then equalled the score line to 3-3 on 22:24 through Jan Marcilis and assisted by Hill. To make matters worse, Conor Redmond was then penalised on 24:41 for tripping with Raiders scoring from the resulting powerplay – Marcilis who grabbing his second goal of the night assisted by Cowan and Hill. The Mos had an opportunity to get back on the board on 28:12 with the Raiders serving a bench penalty for an icing infringement but Stoodley and his defence held strong to see out the powerplay despite efforts from Stedman and Lillis. When Raider returned to full strength they were on the back foot when Dale Buckland sent Banovský skating into attack but the import pulled his shot wide. Off the puck, Marcilis knocked Farrell flying out of sight from the officials in which he got away with no penalty. Stoodley went on to deny Banovský who fired low and hard for the corner of the net, but the Mos would soon get level. With Joe Allen Joe Allen penalised for interference the Mos scored on the powerplay on 35:49 to make it 4-4 – Harrison Lillis grabbing the goal (his 50th Mos point of his career) to get the Kent side level, assisted by Stedman and Thirkettle.

Frustratingly, the Raiders edged back in front on 37:58 – A shot from the right side from Tommy Huggett squeezed past Grandy-Smith for 5-4. During the last period, Tom Davis thundered Cowan into the boards, the Raiders man wasn’t happy and took it out on Farrell by grounding him with a trip. With the Mos on the powerplay it was left to Stoodley to rescue the Raiders when Banovský picked out Farrell who got enough conviction on the puck to direct it to goal but the netminder saved well. When the Raiders returned to full strength they found themselves attacking 3 on 1 against Dale Buckland but somehow the resulting shot was fired wide.

Moments later Marcilis broke and a cheeky back flick almost crept over the line. With the game edging to a close the Mos tried throwing everything at the Raiders but were left shorthanded when Brandon Webster let frustration get the better of him with the Mos’ forward penalised for slashing at Campbell on 58:09 giving the Raiders a powerplay. Despite the Mos pulling netminder Grandy-Smith they couldn’t find the vital equaliser and ended-up pointless.
