Mos lose out to Streatham in first cup game

streatham_290919The Dynamos started their NIHL South Cup campaign with a 7-4 defeat on the road at Streatham on Saturday night.

The travelling side took to the ice without Brandon Webster, Dale Buckland, Kieron Jones and Gregor McAllan. John Dibble started in the net.

Within 20 seconds of the puck drop the first penalties of the game were given to Ryan Giles and Danny Ingoldsby, leaving a 4 on 4 on the ice. Streatham then took the lead on 36 seconds with Adam Carr playing a one-two with Ivan Antonov before firing a back handed shot underneath Dibble for 1-0.

The Mos could have drawn level a few minutes later when Sedivy broke clear and passed the puck across the front of the goalmouth to Dell but he pulled his shot wide of the mark. Streatham were looking the most dangerous when Antonov was on the puck – so it was of little surprise when Lillis had to stop the forward from surging towards goal with a slash on 05:31. The Mos successfully killed the penalty and even registered a shot from Farrell whilst shorthanded.

Streatham doubled their lead to 2-0 on 08:09 with Farn firing a wrist shot from point which Antonov tipped beyond Dibble. It was then soon 3-0 on 12:53 after Conner Smith blasted the puck past Dibble when McCormick found him in space. With the period drawing to a close Lillis threw a massive hit on Smith who almost landed into the Streatham dugout . The frame the concluded with the hosts penalised for too many men on the ice which was served by Ingoldsby.

The Mos started the 2nd period on the powerplay and made it count on 20:41 when Huska cut the puck across goal for Leone to stab past King for 3-1. However, it took Streatham only 11 seconds to restore their three goal cushion with Miles providing the opportunity to Carr who converted past Dibble. Another Streatham attack led by Antonov forced Giles into slashing at the forward and Streatham took full advantage of the resulting powerplay by scoring on 29:52 through Miles for 5-1.

Referee Korsaks was busy for the remainder of the period firstly penalising both Carr and Farn on 31:48 – the pair both called for roughing at their opponents which led to a 5 on 3 powerplay with the Mos failing to take any advantage during the numerical advantage on the ice. Then in the 37th minute Sedivy slashed right under nose of the referee putting Mos on the penalty kill – however, that was short lived on 38:20 when tempers spilled over. Stephenson threw a big hit on Quiney which landed the Streatham player into the plexi and then the ice. Players then piled in – which at its peak saw three fights going on. When the officials finally gained control and calmed matters they gave Quiney a match penalty for fighting, Miles 10 minutes for misconduct as well as 2+2 for fighting and Scott Bailey also getting 2+2 for fighting. For the Dynamos, only Farrell was sent to the penalty box for 2+2 minutes, again for fighting. The second period then ended with no more incidents and the score at 5-1.

The Mos started the final period by swapping netminders with Grandy-Smith replacing Dibble. They were also on a 5 on 3 powerplay and used it well by scoring on 40:22 with Leone turning provider for Huska to fire past King from the left circle. The Mos then scored on again on 46:50 to make it 5-3 with Dell backhanding a rebound into the net.

Any chances for a remarkable Invicta comeback soon faded with Streatham knocking in two quick fire goals in the 48th minute through Warman and Carr (hat-trick) for 7-3. Leone struck the final goal of the game in the 52nd minute when he linked-up with Huska again and hit a shot at King which hit the netminder on the shoulder and deflect over him into the target to end the scoring at 7-4.
